250th birthday Johann Heinrich Voß The poet and alto philologist Johann Heinrich Voß (1751-1826) is considered to be an outstanding translator of ancient literature. His translations of Homer's works continue to set standards. Already as a student of the Neubrandenburg Lateing High School, he learned Greek voluntarily. Later he studied with Christian Gottlob Heyne, a great scholar of that time. In 1781 he publishes the Odyssey translation into German. She finds great response. Voss is asked to translate the Iliad as well. Their appearance in 1793 triggered a long controversy over the translation practice of ancient texts. On the special postage stamp are the silhouette of Voss, the meter Hexameter and the title of the Iliad depicted. The image of the writing hand comes from a copperplate fragment.
