Born in Vienna on December 3, 1900, Kuhn began studying chemistry at the University of Vienna immediately after the First World War. At the age of 22, he graduated summa cum laude. His doctoral thesis dealt with the role of enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism. The enzyme chemistry also remained the scientific focus of his work in the following decades. In 1929, at the instigation of Rudolf Krehl, he was appointed Director of the Department of Chemistry at the newly founded Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg (today Max Plank Institute). In 1937 he took over the overall management of the institute and in 1939 the Nobel Committee in Stockholm decided to award the Nobel Prize for Chemistry to Richard Kuhn for his "Work on Carotenoids and Vitamins". Due to the political situation, the awarding of the prize was not possible until 1949. The great naturalist and enthusiastic teacher died on July 31, 1967 in Heidelberg.
