1700-1975 Academy of Sciences of the GDR On the occasion of the 275th anniversary of the GDR Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four multicolored special postage stamps. 1700-1975 Academy of Sciences of the GDR On July 11, 1975, the GDR Academy of Sciences commemorates the 275th anniversary of its founding. Created as the "Brandenburg Society of Sciences" according to the plans of the great universal scholar Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who was also its first president, today, as a socialist research academy, it is a center of science and research in the GDR. On the occasion of the 275th anniversary of the Academy, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications of the GDR issues a First Day Cover and a series of four special postage stamps. The first day cover contains as motive the front and back of a commemorative plaque, which is created on the occasion of the academy anniversary - the portrait GW Leibniz 'and an excerpt from the donation letter of the academy designed by him "one would have at the same time at the beginning the work together with the science If, therefore, the purpose were to unite Theoriam cum praxi ". This Leibnizian idea marks the goal he wanted to see realized in and through the Academy. The Academy and many of its members have made significant contributions to science and culture in the past. However, Leibniz's demand is comprehensively realized only under the socialist conditions in the GDR. The special postage stamps symbolize the task intended by G. W. Leibniz of the academy to carry out natural and social scientific researches for the benefit of the people. However, they can only convey an impression. A representation of the Academy, which today has a large research potential of more than 40 central institutes in addition to its scholars, an academy that works in all major fields of natural and social sciences, an academy that has counted among its members outstanding researchers since its founding , could not be approximate even in a larger postage stamp series. The 20-pfennig value is one of the large-scale equipment of the Academy for Scientific Research - the "Karl-Schwarzschildt-Observatory" in Tautenburg. Inaugurated in 1960, this observatory, a masterpiece of GDR socialist industry, has since then been used for astrophysical research whose importance has grown in the age of space exploration.
