The three hundredth birthday of the great Baroque painter Daniel Gran is the reason for the issue of this special postage stamp. Gran was the most important Austrian representative of a Baroque style that led to Classicism. Born in Vienna in 1694, at the behest of his guardian, the famous preacher Abraham a Santa Clara, he received instruction in painting at an early age. Through his training with the architecture and history painter Johann Georg Werle Gran came into contact with the house of Prince Schwarzenberg.
