The first documented mention of Eisenstadt, with about 11,000 inhabitants the smallest state capital of Austria, dates back to 1264. Already in 1373 Eisenstadt received the city rights, in 1388 the market right. In 1648 Eisenstadt was able to obtain the elevation to the Free City. In the course of the restoration of the frontier rule to Hungary, the city was incorporated into the Hungarian state in 1655 until the annexation of Burgenland to Austria in 1921. Eisenstadt experienced a special heyday in the 18th century under the art-loving Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, in whose court music band Joseph Haydn worked as Kapellmeister. A visible upswing brought after 1921, the year 1925, when Eisenstadt was raised to the state capital.
