As early as 1924, serious planning for this road construction project began. In a time of the world economic crisis and rising unemployment, the construction of the Großglockner High Alpine Road from 1930 to 1935 was of great economic importance. Between 1929 and 1933 alone, unemployment rose from 195,000 to 557,000, or 26% of the working-age population. The gross national product shrank from 11.4 billion to 8.8 billion schillings, consumption fell by almost a quarter. During the construction period of just 26 months, 3200 people worked at Glocknerstraße. The construction costs amounted to just under 26 million schillings, which corresponded to five percent of the total investment volume in Austria in 1935. After the road had been opened to traffic, in 1936 a total of 146,000 visitors were counted. In the decades that followed, a series of modernisations adapted the quality of this road link to the requirements of modern transport. For example, up to the jubilee year 1985, 90% of the 57.8 km long road could be widened from six to at least 7.5 meters, and in the more demanding sections to three lanes. After all, 35 million people had navigated the Grossglockner High Alpine Road until 1985. The brand image shows the section on Fuschertörl with a view of the Großglockner.
