The Austrian Gymnastics and Sport Union was founded 50 years ago, on 2 May 1945, by former members of the Christian-German Gymnastics Association and the Reichsbundessport of the Catholic Youth. In the reconstruction phase after the end of the war, union associations in the federal states and the state associations of the sports union were established under the difficult circumstances of the occupation. A variety of initiatives, such as fit-with-with, mother-child gymnastics, family-women-senior activities, underline, among all other sporting activities, the social significance of this association. However, the jubilee year 1995 is also occasion to commemorate "100 Years of Christian Sports Movement in Austria", which has emerged as an antipole to German-national gymnastics and to workers' sport.
