On 25 March 2007, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. The agreement was the birth of the European Economic Community (EEC), the predecessor of today's European Union (EU). The six founding Member States of the EEC were Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The early success of the EEC motivated other European countries to join. In enlargement rounds and reform projects, the internal market project of the Rome Treaties - measured by the amount of the national product - expanded into the largest market in the world. Currently, 27 states are members of the European Union.
