John Calvin was born on July 10, 1509 in Noyon, northern France, and is considered by Luther to be the most important reformer. With more than 100 scripts and books translated into many languages, he had great influence. In Basel in 1536 he published his major work "Instruction in the Christian religion." In 1559 he founded the Geneva Academy, which became a focal point of Reformed Protestantism. Today, Reformed churches worldwide number about 80 million members in 107 countries. Calvin died on 27 May 1564 in Geneva. Many impulses emanated from Calvin, which led to the development of today's modern societies, including a right to resist tyranny and a rational view of economic necessities.
