After the Council of Ministers of the GDR had decided on price increases for food in April 1953 and an increase in labor standards of ten percent followed on May 14, 1953, social unrest developed nationwide. This did not change the withdrawal of the price increases on 11 June. The dissatisfaction with the general conditions of life - for example due to lack of political and personal freedoms - culminated in a general strike on 17 June 1953. There were demonstrations all over the country, especially in Berlin. Supported by the People's Police, Soviet troops defeated the uprising. On 4 August 1953, 17 June in the Federal Republic of Germany was declared a public holiday and committed until reunification in 1990 as "Day of German Unity".
