Romy Schneider was born on September 23, 1938 in Vienna as the daughter of actor-couple Magda Schneider and Wolf Albach-Retty. Even as a young girl she wrote in her diary: "I have to become an actress. I have to! "In 1953 it was finally time: She made her debut in the film" When the white lilac blooms again ", followed shortly after the productions" Fireworks "," Girlhood of a Queen "and" Die Deutschmeister ". The international breakthrough came in 1955 with the first part of the well-known Sissi trilogy, for which she was awarded a Bambi. Romy Schneider's life was marked by ups and downs. On the one hand the celebrated film star, on the other hand the actress dropped by the international press; there the happy woman by the side of famous partners (among other things the famous Alain Delon), there the depressive man, who was tested by hard strokes of fate (several divorces, the death of the fourteen-year-old son). In the sixties and seventies Romy Schneider made almost exclusively films in France. During this time, she participated in both artistically and commercially successful productions and shone in numerous stripes on the side of world stars like Michel Piccoli or Yves Montand. Shortly after the premiere of her last film (1982: "The Walker of Sans-Souci") Romy Schneider was found dead in her apartment in Paris. Her heart failure was interpreted by numerous media as "death from a broken heart". It rests on a small cemetery in Boissy -sans-Avoir, 50 kilometers from Paris. At the request of Romy Schneider is on the grave stone only her real name: Rosemarie Albach. In memory of the great actress, the Austrian television prize "Romy" was founded in 1990. The golden statuette shows Romy Schneider in a scene from the movie "swimming pool". Her impressive work includes no fewer than 57 feature films - and perhaps it is precisely the title of the production "The Two Faces of a Woman" that best describes the life of this extraordinary person. By the way: For 2009, a movie adaptation under the title "A woman like Romy", which will produce the American "Warner Bros.", planned. Under the direction of Josef Rusnak, the German singer and actress Yvonne Catterfeld is expected to play the role of Romy Schneider. On the occasion of her 70th birthday, the new "Romy Schneider" special stamp will be released for WIPA08 - a philatelic tribute to the "best actress of her generation" (Orson Wells).
