With these commemorative stamps, the Deutsche Bundespost honors the epoch-making achievements of the two inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, whose motor vehicles were patented on July 3, 1886, for the development of traffic engineering. This event, which is now 75 years old, has initiated the motorization of transport. For the planned anniversary stamps, the graphic designer Heinz Siegmund has submitted designs with graphically strict representations of the first motor vehicles of Daimler and Benz. These proposals were already well-balanced in their overall content and in the treatment of the details, so that it was not necessary to obtain further competition drafts. The designs, in which each of the two cars and the facsimile signatures of the inventors were combined into a closed composition, gave rise to the fear that the minute details of the representation would be lost in the reduction to brand size. The Art Advisory Board therefore recommended dedicating a brand to each inventor. The Federal Minister of Posts and Telecommunications has approved this proposal. The result is a pair of brands that give a clear expression to the theme »technology« without false pathos. The stamps have been produced by Bundesdruckerei Berlin in two-color offset printing in green and black - red and black.
