Founded as a nunnery in 1248, there were 16 Cistercian nuns living and working in Sankt Marienstern, probably from the monastery of St. Marienthron near Torgau. Marienstern was not spared from destruction and external influences despite the retired life of the sisters. Thus, the monastery was partially destroyed, among other things in the Thirty Years' War at the invasion of Sweden in the Lusatia. Today there are 24 Cistercian women aged 22 to 88 living in Sankt Marienstern.
