Hermann Gmeiner was born on June 23, 1919 in Alberschwende in Vorarlberg, the son of a large farming family. His personal fate, he was educated by his eldest sister after the early death of his mother, soon shaped his own personal life experience. He wanted to become a pediatrician and began to study medicine in Innsbruck. There he got to know the plight and misery of the refugee children. When he founded the association SOS Kinderdorf in 1949 from this experience, he could not have guessed that it would be the beginning of a worldwide movement in the service of the children of this earth. The first SOS Children's Village in Imst in Tyrol was built in the same year.
