Born on September 6, 1915 in Munich, the political activity of Franz Josef Strauß began shortly after the end of the war as a local politician in Schongau. As early as in contact with the founders of the CSU at the state level, he soon became part of the party-political decision-making process. In 1949, elected member of the German Bundestag, Konrad Adenauer appointed him Federal Minister for Special Tasks in 1953, Federal Minister for Nuclear Affairs in 1955, and finally Federal Minister of Defense in 1956. Because of his knowledge in the field of financial and economic policy, Kurt Georg Kiesinger brought him in 1966 as Minister of Finance of the Grand Coalition in the Cabinet. After their end, Franz Josef Strauß continued to act as finance and economic policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group. Here, as well as CSU chairman since 1961, he implemented his own ideas and concepts, the effects of which were felt decades later. His decades of cultivated worldwide relations also allowed him to mediate in solving mutual problems. Since November 6, 1978, as Bavarian Prime Minister active, Franz Josef Strauss was in 1980 joint chancellor candidate of the Union. Despite the defeat, he remained present as a member of the Federal Council and as its president in 1983/84 in federal politics. With his death on October 3, 1988 Bayern lost not only an incumbent Prime Minister, but the Federal Republic of one of its most influential political figures.
