At the foot of the Anningers (674 m), about 20 km south of Vienna, lies the market Gumpoldskirchen. In 1140 Gumpoldskirchen was first mentioned in the will of the cathedral provost Gumpold von Pornheim. The economic basis was already in the Middle Ages in viticulture. The Turkish year 1529 and the Turkish war of 1693 brought heavy setbacks in the development of the market. In 1787, the industrial age of Gumpoldskirchen entered into a silk-spinning mill. After the completion of the Wiener Neustädter Schifffahrtskanal in 1803, the first companies emerged at its locks. They represented the crystallization point of today's vast industrial zone.
