The European wildcat or forest cat (Felis silvestris silvestris) is distributed in Europe, some Mediterranean islands and parts of southwest Asia. Above all, it is recognizable by its bushy tail, which ends in a blunt curve - usually with three black "squiggles". The dense fur shows a striking, sometimes washed out stripe pattern. The primeval wildcat probably developed 2 million years ago, and out of this, the modern wildcat would have developed in Europe around 300,000 years ago. The biggest problem for the wildcat in modern times is the intensive use of the landscape through settlements, traffic and agriculture. As a result, the animals are pushed back to small, island-like residual habitats.
