Muhammad Ali was born on 17 January 1942 in Louisville under the name of Cassius Marcellus Clay. He began boxing as a twelve-year-old and celebrated his first major international success in 1969 by winning the light heavyweight gold medal at the Rome Olympics. In 1964 he played after 20 professional fights his first title fight, defeating Sonny Liston and became world champion of all classes. In the same year he changed after the connection to the Black Muslim Movement his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1967 Muhammad Ali was sentenced to probation for his conscientious objection to prison, after which his passport was removed, the World Cup title was revoked and the professional boxing license was withdrawn. In 1970, the verdict was overturned. In 1971, he entered in a title fight against world champion Joe Frazier and lost on points. The revenge fight against Frazier in 1974 he won on points. Muhammad Ali retook the heavyweight title in October of the same year when he defeated defending champion George Foreman in Kinshasa ("Rumble in the Jungle") by KO in the eighth round. In one of the hardest fights of his career he retained in 1975 against Joe Frazier the upper hand. In 1978, he lost the title to Leon Spinks in Las Vegas, but won him back in the same year in a 15-round fight against Spinks. In 1979, he declared his resignation, but stepped 37 years later in the following year against Larry Holmes and lost to task in the tenth round. The last fight of his career Muhammad Ali denied in December 1981 against Trevor Berbick (point defeat). Muhammad Ali's fight record as a professional is 56 victories (37 of them by KO) in five defeats.
