The Austrian Post has recognized the importance of satellites for the production of telecommunications connections at an early stage. As early as 1965, the first commercial telecommunications satellite was used in Vienna - New York. This satellite line, which was switched over a Erdefunkstelle in the neighboring foreign country, followed soon more. However, the growing need for communication increasingly required the establishment of a separate telecommunications satellite connection in Austria. So in 1979 in the municipality Aflenz in the Alpine region Hochschwab (Styria) started construction. In May 1980, the plant was commissioned. Even then, this was the occasion for the issue of a special postage stamp. Until 1988, another three antennas were built. The earth station Aflenz as a communication bridge for intercontinental and regional satellite connections already demonstrated the great efforts made by Swiss Post to cover the needs of telecommunications connections in the best possible way.
