The 2003 Christmas stamp shows the 1951 glass window "Christi Geburt" by Fritz Krcal in the parish church Hohenems. In the manger lies the baby Jesus, flanked by two sheep, behind Mary and Joseph in adoring attitude, between them a donkey looks out. Three angels hover above the star and two hold a tape. The parish church of St. Charles Borromeo is a beautiful parish church with an intricately carved altar. It was built in 1796/97 and is dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, a relative of the Count's house. The carved high altar is Vorarlberg's most important Renaissance work, probably created around 1580 by the Feldkirch sculptor Heinrich Dieffolt. The historic town of Hohenems with about 14,000 inhabitants is located in the middle of the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley in the immediate vicinity of Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The development of Hohenems is closely linked to the history of the noble lords of Hohenems. Hohenems first entered the limelight in the late 12th century. Hohenems gained fame as the locality of manuscripts A and C of the Nibelungenlied.
