Cityscapes - District Cities of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored special postage stamps with cityscapes of district towns from the north of the GDR. Special Cancellation from April 5 to June 4, 1988 District Cities in the North of the GDR By depicting district towns from the north of the GDR on special postage stamps, the German Post pays tribute to cities that make significant contributions to our country's economy and considerable respect for their higher education and universities. Extensive resources are spent by the state to restore and preserve unique historic buildings and architectural ensembles. New residential areas surround the old city centers and carry the handwriting of resourceful hard-working citizens. 10 Pfennig value: Anklam At the lower reaches of the Peene lies the county town of Anklam, which has 20,400 inhabitants and is the economic, cultural and administrative center of an agricultural circle in the district of Neubrandenburg. Anklam has operations in industry and agriculture, also fulfills traffic functions and is the location of the Interflug agricultural base for the northern districts. The cultural institutions include the theater and the Fritz Reuter Ensemble. The Gothic brick building of St. Mary's Church (early 14th c.), The "High Stone", an old watchtower (15th c.), Remains of the city fortification with the stone gate (15th c.), The Powder Tower (15th c. ) and the Otto Lilienthal Monument are sights of the city. In the coat of arms of Anklam dominated by a griffin, as a heraldic animal of Pomeranian dukes.
