Cityscapes - District Cities of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored special postage stamps with cityscapes of district towns from the north of the GDR. Special Cancellation from April 5 to June 4, 1988 District Cities in the North of the GDR By depicting district towns from the north of the GDR on special postage stamps, the German Post pays tribute to cities that make significant contributions to our country's economy and considerable respect for their higher education and universities. Extensive resources are spent by the state to restore and preserve unique historic buildings and architectural ensembles. New residential areas surround the old city centers and carry the handwriting of resourceful hard-working citizens. 60 Pfennig value: Stralsund Stralsund lies on the west bank of the Strelasunds and is with 75 000 inhabitants second largest city of the district Rostock. Stralsund is a harbor and industrial city, traffic and tourist center. One of the most important companies is the Volkswerft, which is the center of international fishery shipbuilding. The inland roads and trunk roads leading from Stralsund pass through the Rügendamm to Mukran and Saßnitz. The Maritime Museum is one of the most unique facilities. The Museum of Cultural History, the 500-year old skipper company, the city library, the city archive and the theater are some of the social amenities of the city. On the Old Market Square is the Town Hall complex (13th / 14th century) with a magnificent façade of brick Gothic. Buildings of late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism characterize the island core of the old town. An arrow with its tip pointing upwards, silver on a red background with a paw cross hovering over it adorns the coat of arms of the city.
