Soviet War Memorial Berlin-Schönholz As part of the series "Remembrance and Memorial Sites", the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a multi-color special postage stamp depicting the Soviet Memorial in Berlin-Schönholz. Special cancellations from September 20 to November 19, 1977 THE HEROES FOR THE ETERNAL REMEMBRANCE The Soviet War Memorial in Berlin-Schönholz is one of the most beautiful and impressive honorary homes for the heroes of the fallen in the April and May days of 1945 for the liberation of Berlin against Hitler's fascism Soviet Union. Here more than 13,200 fallen Soviet soldiers, NCOs, officers and generals have found their final resting place. They are among the 20 million Soviet citizens who committed their lives to the victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War. The Soviet War Memorial in Berlin-Schönholz was built between 1947 and 1949. The memorial is a creation of the Soviet architectural collective KA Sobolev, M. Belarenseva, BD Karoleva, the Soviet sculptor JG Perchadchev and the Soviet engineering collective GM Slebnikov, AA Golub, BG Dudrowski and MG Usman. The management had the chief architect K. A. Sobolev. Its layout resembles that of an ancient Egyptian burial site, bounded by a 560-meter-long Ehrenmauer wall, in which 10O niches are built, in which bronze plates with names of the Soviet soldiers buried in front of them are placed. On the connecting road between the Pankow districts Niederschönhausen and Wilhelmsruh, two pillars from Syenit represent the entrance to the memorial site. On their front side they are wearing bronze wreaths, carved into the stone are the words: "TO THE HEROES FOR THE ETERNAL THOUGHT". A small alley with springs led to the forecourt. Two mighty corner towers separate the forecourt from the main courtyard and each bears a larger-than-life bronze relief on the fronts, symbolizing the fighting and mourning heroes of the Soviet Union. To the 33.5 meter high main monument, the obelisk, lead two parallel main roads, past eight sarcophagus-like grave chambers. In front of the obelisk rises the monument of the Russian mother, depicted in simple folk costume. On a total area of 30,950 square meters, over 13,200 heroes of the Soviet Army were laid to rest in the peaceful Schönholzer Heide, of which only 2,367 are known, for the liberation of fascism. On November 7, 1949, the Soviet War Memorial in the People's Park Schönholzer Heide was inaugurated by the Red Army.
