Narrow Gauge Railways in the GDR 1st Edition With the depiction of narrow gauge railways in the GDR, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes two multicolour se-tenants. No special first-day cover handling Narrow Gauge Railways in the GDR In the seventies of the last century the railway network in the former Germany was essentially created; only in rural areas and difficult geographical regions was there still a need for railways of local importance. These were to supplement the network of normal gauge railways in many ways and were built for reasons of economy mostly narrow gauge with gauges between 600 and 1000 mm. In the area of ​​the GDR, eight narrow-gauge railways will continue to be preserved as technical monuments in the future, opening up particularly attractive routes and serving tourism. Narrow gauge track Bad Doberan-Ostseebad Kühlungsborn The only narrow gauge railway in the GDR with 900 mm gauge leads from Bad Doberan (route Rostock - Wismar) to the Baltic Sea resort Kühlungsborn and has a total length of 15.4 km. It was built in 1886. From Bad Doberan station, the "Molli", as the train is popularly known, first passes through the city of Bad Doberan and runs after leaving the city parallel to the road to Heiligendamm. After about 10 km the line reaches the stop "Heiligendamm cliff" the immediate vicinity of the Baltic Sea coast and leads from there to the village Kühlungsborn. This train is mainly used in the summer by many Baltic Sea vacationers. Since the end of freight traffic on June 1, 1960, only passenger trains operate.
