To the games of the XXII. The sums raised will be made available to the Society to promote the Olympic idea in the GDR. Games of the XXII. Olympiad 1980, 1st edition The games of the XXII. The 1980 Olympics, which take place for the first time in the capital of a socialist country, in Moscow, are the occasion for a new series of special postage stamps, which in turn reproduce works by the visual artists of the GDR. This reflects the internationally recognized fact that physical culture and sport have become a fully-fledged subject of the visual and applied arts of the GDR. In the spirit of the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin, to see "sport as an opportunity for art and as a producer of art", the artists of the GDR understood the reputation and support of the German Gymnastics and Sports Federation of the GDR and for many years has worked creatively on the valid and convincing design of sporting themes and motifs. A growing number of visual artists were not only apprehended by the aesthetic appeal of physical movement, shapes and colors, by the dynamism and tension of athletic competition, but above all by the insight into humanistic concerns and the successful social impact of the socialist sports organization the socialist way of life and the formation of the personality of millions of citizens of the GDR. The three motifs of this series give only a small insight into the rich and varied work of the visual artists of the GDR on this topic. There have already been four exhibitions "Art and Sport" in the GDR, each with several hundred works created on behalf of or as a result of artistic competitions. Wilfried Falkenthal (born 1942) also tried several times in the sporting field. Accurate observation of the competitive atmosphere speaks from his painting on the 50-pfennig value "Vierer Without" (1977, oil, 125 x 162 cm, owned by the district executive of Leipzig DTSB of the GDR). Valuable personality qualities of the competitive athletes of our country such as dedication, performance, fighting and collectivity find their symbolic expression in the powerful action.
