Narrow Gauge Railways in the GDR, 3rd Edition With the depiction of narrow gauge railways in the GDR, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues two multi-colored se-tenant prints. Narrow Gauge Railways in the GDR Narrow Gauge Wernigerode - Nordhausen (Harzquerbahn) The narrow gauge Gauge Wernigerode - Nordbausen was put into operation in sections from 1897 to 1899 and is still considered one of the most scenic narrow gauge sections of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The lowest point of the route is at Nordhausen at 183 m above sea level. Drei-Annen-Hohne is at 540 m above sea level the highest point of the route, which then drops back to Wernigerode at 234 m above sea level. As a result of the topographical difficulties that stood in the way of road construction in the Harz, the Harz actually opened up the Harz economically and also for tourism. The Harzquerbahn has a length of 60.5 km and in Nordhausen as well as in Wernigerode connection to the regular gauge network of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. In addition to the passenger traffic here is also a brisk freight - usually carried out with rule track cars on rolling stands - to the numerous industrial companies in the Harz. Because of its special importance for tourism, this route will continue to operate as a narrow gauge line in the future.
