City arms of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic begins in 1983 with the publication of a multi-colored special postage stamp series "Stadtwappen der DDR", which is continued in the years 1984/85. Special cancellations from August 9 to October 8 Stadtwappen The issue series on city heraldry opens with five multi-colored special postage stamps with the coat of arms of Berlin, capital of the GDR, as well as the city arms of the district cities Cottbus, Dresden, Erfurt and Frankfurt / Oder. The coat of arms of Dresden shows in the split golden shield in front a black lion with red tongue and reinforcement, behind two black piles. The black lion on a golden background is the mark of the Margraviate of Meissen, the (actually blue) piles of the Margraviate Landsberg; Both territories were in the possession of the Wettins since the 11th or 12th century, who resided in Dresden as Saxon rulers. The oldest depiction with these motifs dates back to 1302, the representation of the Landsberg stakes in black was probably to distinguish the city colors from those of the court (blue-gold).
