City arms of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic begins in 1983 with the publication of a multi-colored special postage stamp series "Stadtwappen der DDR", which is continued in the years 1984/85. Special cancellations from August 9 to October 8 Stadtwappen The issue series on city heraldry opens with five multi-colored special postage stamps with the coat of arms of Berlin, capital of the GDR, as well as the city arms of the district cities Cottbus, Dresden, Erfurt and Frankfurt / Oder. The coat of arms of Erfurt shows in the red shield a silver wheel with six spokes. The silver wheel on a red background comes from the coat of arms of the Archbishopric of Mainz, to which the city belonged until 1802. As a landmark of the city it appears as early as 1300 on coins, in the seals but only in the 17th century.
