City arms of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic begins in 1983 with the publication of a multi-colored special postage stamp series "Stadtwappen der DDR", which is continued in the years 1984/85. Special cancellations from August 9 to October 8, 1983 Stadtwappen The municipal heraldry issue series is being opened with five multi-colored special postage stamps with the coat of arms of Berlin, capital of the GDR, and the city arms of the district cities of Cottbus, Dresden, Erfurt and Frankfurt / Oder. The coat of arms of Cottbus shows in the golden shield a red castle with a closed gate, between whose two towers a silver triangle shield floats with a red crayfish. The red crayfish in the silver shield was the family crest of the wealthy Lower Lusatian noblemen of Cottbus, of which the city was built around 1230 on a regular floor plan and expanded. Walls, gate and towers are common symbols of the city. This coat of arms shows already the oldest city seal of the beginning of the 14th century.
