City arms of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic begins in 1983 with the publication of a multi-colored special postage stamp series "Stadtwappen der DDR", which is continued in the years 1984/85. Special cancellations from August 9 to October 8 Stadtwappen The issue series on city heraldry opens with five multi-colored special postage stamps with the coat of arms of Berlin, capital of the GDR, as well as the city arms of the district cities Cottbus, Dresden, Erfurt and Frankfurt / Oder. The coat of arms of Frankfurt / Oder shows in a silver shield a golden red cock in the open gate of a two-towered red gatehouse with gothic architectural elements; above the gatehouse a silver shield with a red eagle. The cock in the gate as a landmark of Frankfurt is once interpreted as a symbol of vigilance, another time as a talking figure for the first part of the city name, as the Latin word for Franke "gallus" means, but this term is synonymous with cock. The red eagle in the silver shield is the coat of arms of the Mark Brandenburg, in whose dominion the city was founded in the 13th century. The coat of arms can be seen on the oldest known city seal of 1294.
