Martin Luther Award of the GDR 1983 On the occasion of the Martin Luther honoring of the GDR in 1983, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued a multi-colored special postage stamp block. No special First Day Cover Special cancellation from October 18 to December 17, 1983 Martin Luther Honoration of the GDR 1983 On November 10, 1983, Martin Luther celebrates his 500th birthday. For the special postage stamps issued so far, this special postage stamp block is issued at 1, - mark. The block shows the title page of the Zerbst Cranach Bible on the left. After the translation of the Bible by Martin Luther, the full Bible appeared in 1534 for the first time. This edition was corrected and improved by Martin Luther along with other staff, so that in 1541 a new revised edition could be issued. The bible was printed in Wittenberg by Hans Lufft. Some copies of this edition were published on parchment. The illustrative woodcuts from the Cranach workshop were colored and partly decorated with gold leaf. These valuable parchment bibles were acquired by princely houses. Three of these precious specimens were commissioned by the Anhalt princes Wolfgang, Johann, Georg and Joachim. They are provided with a special title page. The main part shows nine shields of the coat of arms and in the lower middle the arms of Martin Luther. In 1543 Prince Joachim von Anhalt gave the town of Zerbst one of the three pompous burgs commissioned by the Anhalt princes. This has become known under the name Zerbst Prunkbibel. A special feature of the Zerbst Prunkbibel are three engraved gold leaves each on the back inside with the portraits of Martin Luther, Elector John Frederick of Saxony and Emperor Charles V, which has executed the Hallenser goldsmith Jobst Kammerer (Kemmerer). In addition, all three contain handwritten entries of Bugenhagen, Melanchthon and other contemporaries and coworkers Luther. On the right side, the year of printing (1541), the academic degree (Doctor), the first letters of the first and last name (Martin Luther) are shown and transferred from the left side.
