Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers' Movement, Edition 1984 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes three commemorative postage stamps depicting deserving personalities of the German labor movement. From 1919 worked journalistically at social-democratic correspondent offices and newspapers, among them from 1920 to 1923 as an editor of "Vorwärts" and from 1925 to 1933 as editor-in-chief of the "Brandenburger Zeitung". 1925-1933 member of the district executive committee of the SPD Brandenburg border mark and chairman of the SPD sub-district Brandenburg Westhavelland-Zauch / Belzig. As chairman of the SPD faction in the Brandenburg city parliament, as head of the town council and as a member of the Reichstag from 1928 to 1933 and as a member of the Prussian Council of State in 1933, he gained parliamentary experience, especially in local politics. With the establishment of the fascist dictatorship from July to December 1933 incarcerated in the concentration camps Oranienburg, Börgermoor-Ems and Lichtenburg. 1934 connection to illegally fighting anti-fascist resistance groups, including to the led by the KPD Uhrig organization. Since 1971 Chairman of the SED faction in the highest representative body of the GDR. 1950 to 1958 President of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship. 1950 Member of the National Council and the Presidium of the National Front of the GDR. 1957 to 1964 President of the German Cities and Towns Day of the GDR. 1960-1971 member and since 1971 deputy chairman of the State Council of the GDR. He made a significant contribution to the founding and development of the SED, to the establishment and strengthening of the first German workers and peasants state and to the development of Berlin, the capital of the GDR. Friedrich Ebert died on December 4, 1979 in Berlin.
