Coat of Arms of the GDR, Edition 1984 With the publication of five multicolored special postage stamps, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic continues the series "Stadtwappen der DDR". The coat of arms of Magdeburg shows in the silver shield a two-towered red castle with an open gate, on whose battlements between the towers stands a green-robed maiden who holds in her raised right hand a green wreath - Magdeburg has a so-called "talking" coat of arms, the contents of which City name reflects: a maid (Middle High German maget = virgin, hence the maiden wreath in her hand) and a castle. This picture can already be found in the oldest city seal of 1240.
