Coat of Arms of the GDR, Edition 1984 With the publication of five multicolored special postage stamps, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic continues the series "Stadtwappen der DDR". Special cancellations from February 21 to April 20, 1984 Stadtwappen The second city herald issue brings the coat of arms of the district towns of Gera, Halle, Karl-Marx-Stadt, Leipzig and Magdeburg. The coat of arms of Karl-Marx-Stadt shows in the split gold shield in front two blue piles, behind a black lion with red tongue and reinforcement. A similarity of this coat of arms with those of Dresden and Leipzig is unmistakable. These are also the Wettin emblems, which led the Saxon royal house, namely the Landsberger piles and the Meissen lion. These figures can already be seen on city seals from the 14th or 15th century, but each in separate shields. An unification on the two halves of a shield first appears in the 18th century.
