Leipziger Spring Fair 1985 At the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1985, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued two multicolored special postage stamps. Special cancellation from 5 March to 4 May 1985 10 Pfennig value New Bach monument The city of Leipzig has two Bach memorials. The Alte Bachdenkmal is located in the park on Martin-Luther-Ring and was founded in 1843 by Felix MendelssohnBartholdy. The illustration on the stamp shows the New Bach Monument, which has its location south of the Thomaskirche on the Thomaskirchhof. It was built by the then Bach Association, which had received a financial aid of 25,000 marks from the city treasury. The monument consists of pedestal and statue. The 3.20 m high, based on Baroque forms of post mortem limestone made by Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg (draft) and Karl Laux (stonework). On the pedestal stands in bronze, 2.45 m high, the full-length portrait of Johann Sebastian Bach - modeled by Carl Seffner, cast by the foundry Noack in Leipzig. Sheet music, organ and - at the back - a small relief, which shows the broken off in 1902 Thomas School, are part of the image attributes that point to Bach's work as a Thomaskantor. After the recovery of the Bachgrabe in 1894 Wilhelm His, a renowned anatomist from the University of Leipzig, tried to reconstruct his body measurements, especially the skull of the dead. Seffner took these measurements into account in the model sculpture. Thus, the naturalistic effect of the artwork finds an explanation.
