Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement, Edition 1987 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four commemorative postage stamps depicting deserving personalities of the German workers' movement. No special first day cover envelope Special cancellation from March 24 to May 23, 1987 Robert Siewert On December 30, 1887, he was born in Schwersens / Poland, the son of a carpenter. He attended elementary school and learned the profession of a bricklayer. In 1905 he became a member of the union and joined in 1906 the Social Democratic Party. He was from 1908 to 1913 in Zurich and was here a board member of the International Workers' Association "Eintracht". From 1913 to 1914 he was secretary of the Swiss Building Trade Association in Bern. During the meetings in preparation for the Zimmerwald Conference in 1915, he met W. I. Lenin. From 1915 to 1918 he spread pamphlets of the Spartacist group at the front as a soldier in the First World War and was elected in the November Revolution in 1918 in a workers 'and soldiers' council. Since its foundation Robert Siewert was a member of the KPD. As a secretary of the KPD district leadership Erzgebirge Vogtland and as a member of the Saxon Landtag he earned great merit in the class struggle at the beginning of the twenties, 1924/1925 he was commissioned to head the "Association of International Publishing Institutions" in Berlin From 1925 to 1931 he worked as an editor of the newspaper "Die Einheit" in Berlin and as managing director of "Arbeiterpolitik" in Berlin and Leipzig. In the 1920s, he led workers' delegations to the Soviet Union. In 1935 he was imprisoned by the Nazis in the prison Luckau and from 1938 in the Buchenwald concentration camp. After liberation from the concentration camp he went to Halle as one of the activists of the first hour. In July 1945 he was appointed 1st Vice President of the Province of Saxony and the following year elected Minister of the Interior of Saxony-Anhalt. He was from 1946 to 1950 a member of the state executive committee and the secretariat of the SED in Saxony-Anhalt. Thereafter, Robert Siewert was appointed to the Ministry of Construction in Berlin as the head of department. Since 1949 he was a member of the presidium of the committee of the anti-fascist resistance fighters of the GDR and leader of the working group Buchenwald. On November 2, 1973, Robert Siewert died in Berlin.
