Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues two special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German workers' movement. Special cancellation from January 16 to March 15, 1990 Meritorious personalities of the German labor movement Erich Weinert Born on August 4, 1890 in Magdeburg. 1905-1908 apprenticeship as a machinist. Studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Magdeburg and at the Royal Art School Berlin from 1908-1912. In 1912 passed the exam as a drawing teacher. Military service from 1913-1919. At first no active enemy of the war, Erich Weinert enthusiastically welcomed the November Revolution. Since 1924 he worked for the central organ of the KPD "The Red Flag" and for other press organs of the workers' movement. He was co-founder of the League of proletarian-revolutionary writers of Germany (October 1928) and co-editor of his organ "The Left Turn". He was an outstanding contributor to the development of proletarian-revolutionary literature and used his artistic abilities as a weapon in the class struggle. In 1929 he joined the KPD. 1933 Emigration to Switzerland and France. In 1935 participation in the fight against the annexation of the Saar area to fascist Germany. From 1937-1939 fight in the ranks of the International Brigades in Spain. From 1939 in the Soviet Union, he contributed significantly to the development of anti-fascist literature. After the fascist attack on the Soviet Union, he did anti-fascist reconnaissance work at the front. He was one of the founders of the National Committee "Free Germany" (July 1943), whose president he was until 1945. At the beginning of 1946 he returned to Germany. Since its founding member of the SED. Since 1946 Vice President of the German Central Administration for Public Education, he campaigned for the anti-fascist-democratic renewal of culture. He was one of the founding members of the German Academy of Arts in 1950. An illness which he contracted while working on the Stalingrad front hampered his political and literary activity. Erich Weinert died on April 20, 1953 in Berlin.
