The Marchfeld is an approximately 1000 km2 large, intensively agricultural area east of Vienna. For decades, the groundwater level has been falling due to the increased abstraction for agriculture, trade, industry, the increased use of urban water and structural changes in the groundwater balance. To remedy this threatening situation, approximately 25 km of channels will be created in the course of the Marchfeld Canal system and 40 km of existing streams will be rehabilitated in their water quality. Due to the conscientious planning, the 37.5 km long extension line was completed on time, so that its flooding took place in the fall of 1992 according to plan.
