The centenary of the death of St. John Bosco in 1988 triggered many anniversary activities. The occasion for the edition of the special postage stamp was one of them, namely the "International Congress of Salesians Don Bosco - Vienna 1988". Johannes Melchior Bosco was born as a child of poor peasants in Asti (near Turin in northern Italy) on 16 August 1815. He became groundbreaking founder of a new educational idea. It was not the method of repression that was so pronounced in his day, but the education with love and friendly reason that was his way to the hearts of young people. The success of his method was unstoppable, although advocates of traditional education did not make it easy for him. On September 18, 1859, the "Society of St. Francis de Sales", the Salesian of Don Bosco, was founded. Salesians because Don Bosco had chosen this saint as the patron of his idea. Until his death in 1888, he was able to follow a rapid development of his movement, which continues to this day throughout the world.
