Founded on 4 June 1987, the Cultural Foundation of the Länder is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of art and culture of national importance. The calculator by Johann Christoph Schuster (1759-1823) was built from 1820 to 1822 in Ansbach. It consists of 1,025 handmade items and is the last artisan-made machine of its kind. The calculator driven by a hand crank can perform the four basic arithmetic automatically. The existence of this specimen was unknown until 1993 and its discovery a small sensation. The restored and now functional machine has been on display at the Arithmeum Science Museum in Bonn since 1999.
