For centuries horse-drawn mail carriages had regularly carried people and mail. With the triumphal march of the "motor car" the Reichspost decided to use also motor driven vehicles for these tasks. The first state motor mail service in today's Germany was taken on 1 June 1905 on a 10.4 km long route between Bad Tölz and Lenggries. The two world wars interrupted the steady growth of the force postal service. In the record year 1975, around 435 million passengers were carried. The postal service was privatized from the mid-1970s or from 1982 to the then Federal Railways. In 1985, Swiss Post ceased passenger transport.
