In the usual festive way, the Austrian philatelists also celebrated the day of the stamp in 1958. The special postage stamp issued for this occasion shows the post office building of Kitzbühel, which was built in the years 1954 to 1956. To the left is the bus shelter of the post office. Around 1000 AD, a castle was mentioned around 1165, at that time already a respectable settlement "Chüzbühel", which was granted city rights in 1271. In 1506 Kitzbühel, which until then once belonged to Bavaria and then again to Tyrol, was united by Maximilian I with Austria. In the 16th century, the mining boomed, which lasted until the 18th century. As a result, the mining revenues diminished, in 1774 he was completely discontinued. Until the 19th century, the city lived away from the "big traffic" and thus without its own post office. The next one was two hours' walk away in St. Johann in Tirol. On March 29, 1840 was according to "Ordinance of the k.k. Supreme Court postal administration" the establishment of a letter collection in Kitzbichl has. May 1, 1840 can therefore be regarded as the birthday of the post office Kitzbühel.
