This stamp on Stamp Day in 1985 had a very special meaning. With her, the Austrian Postal and Telegraph Administration also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the issue of the first special postage stamp on this occasion. For in 1934, when the president of the Association of German Philatelic Associations, Major Hans von Rudolphi, proposed to annually stamp a stamp to promote philately, this idea first fell on fertile ground in Austria. In the following year, the Association of Austrian Philatelic Clubs and the Post organized an exhibition under this motto and presented a six-value brand series "Austrian Army Commander" along with a special postmark dedicated to the occasion. He showed a globe and the inscription "Stamp Day - December 1, 1935". Thus, the "Stamp Day" was born and Austria may claim to have celebrated it for the first time. The Stamp of the Stamp Day 1985 shows a Roman messenger on horseback and thus addresses the already very high standard of the Roman postal system. The Roman "Cursus publicus", the Roman state postal service, was linked to a high-quality road system and well-organized courier and postal services.
