During the winter months of 1914/15, the town of Przemysl, the main Austrian fortress in Galicia against Russia, was besieged twice in quick succession, thereby being sealed off from the outside world. The newly developed aircraft of that time offered to establish contact between army commando and fortress crew to carry written orders and also a little private mail. That was the birth of the first airmail and at the same time the first airlift. On April 2, 1918, you can read in the Post and Telegraph Regulation No. 15 under the heading "Regulations" already: "No.17: Ordinance on the introduction of an airmail traffic between Vienna and Lviv." With this regulation Austria celebrated at that time a world premiere. From March 31, 1918 on, private mail could now be officially transported by plane.
