The "Stamp Day" has been celebrated in Germany every year since 1936 on the last Sunday in October. In the year 1992 it falls on the 25th of October, at which the Federation of German Philatelists registered association (BDPh) deliberately with a variety of exhibitions, advertising shows, special post offices and special stamps the general public the beauty and diversity of collecting stamps and postal history documents becomes. In unified Germany over 3 million collectors devote themselves to philately in their spare time. Almost 100,000 of them are organized in the Association of German Philatelists. Over 1,500 local stamp clubs and youth groups regularly invite their members and friends to club evenings, bartering and exhibitions. Since 1975, the Deutsche Bundespost has regularly issued a special stamp for "Stamp Day". In the series »Historische Postmotive« the motif »balloon mail« was selected for this year. Undoubtedly, the balloon mail is one of the earliest chapters and the most popular areas of the airmail. It makes almost all collectors' hearts beat faster, but it attaches in a special way a touch of adventure and romance. Specialists and connoisseurs know that as early as 1870/71, during the Franco-Prussian War, there was an official balloon mailing in besieged Paris. It created at that time the only connection of the besieged to the outside world, a wireless telegraphy did not exist yet. From September 1870 to January 1871, more than two and a half million letters were transported to unoccupied France over a distance of more than 100 kilometers from this balloon mail. In Germany a private balloon flight counts in 1897 from Leipzig to Tarnow to the l. Postal transport of this kind. However, balloon flights are not suitable for regular service. The aircraft is not steerable and moreover depending on the weather. Balloon flights with predominantly private mail are still popular highlights in the supporting program of air sports competitions or philatelic events.
