This stamp shows the German local poet Johann Peter Hebel, who was born on 10 May 1760 in Basel. After he had become a teacher in Karlsruhe in 1791, he wrote his serene Alemannic poems (1803) out of homesickness and summarized other humorous works in his "Treasure Chest of the Rhenish House Friend" in 1811. Hebel died on September 22, 1826 in Schwetzingen. (The catalog numbers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 appeared in December 1947. For the sake of systematics, the editors note the date of issue 1 December 1947)
