The motif shows Hans Baldung, who is also called Grien. The famous German painter and engraver was born around 1484 in Schwäbisch-Gmünd. As a pupil of Dürer he painted many religious and mythical pictures. His woodcuts and stained glass are also very famous. Baldung died in 1545 in Strasbourg. (The catalog numbers 16, 17, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26 and 27 appeared in July and August 1848. For the sake of systematics, the editors recorded the date of issue 1 July 1948 and 1 August 1948).
