The motif shows the Höllental in the Black Forest. It is about nine kilometers long and has up to 600 meters high rocky slopes on the sides. According to legend, at its narrowest point, the so-called Hirschsprung, a deer fleeing from its hunters had jumped from one side to the other. Because of its scenic location, it is very popular with tourists and hikers. (The catalog numbers 16, 17, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26 and 27 appeared in July and August 1848. For the sake of systematics, the editors recorded the date of issue 1 July 1948 and 1 August 1948).
