The motif shows Hans Baldung, who is also called Grien. The famous German painter and engraver was born around 1484 in Schwäbisch-Gmünd. As a pupil of Dürer he painted many religious and mythical pictures. His woodcuts and stained glass are also very famous. Baldung died in 1545 in Strasbourg. (The catalog numbers 28 to 37 appeared in November and December 1948 and January 1949. For the sake of systematics, the editors recorded the issue dates of 1 November and 1 December 1948 and 1 January 1949).
