GDR shipbuilding The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues six special postage stamps with illustrations of ship types being built in the GDR. Shipbuilding in the German Democratic Republic Shipbuilding in the GDR has developed into a high-performance, export-intensive industry during its twenty-year existence. The annual output of about 10,000 GRT (1949) has risen steadily and will exceed the 350,000 GRT limit (1971). The GDR shipbuilding is currently in third place in the world in fishing vessel construction. Dry cargo ships, special ships and fishing vessels are exported to 20 countries, including the Soviet Union, the largest customer and others. Countries like France, India and England count. From the extensive product range of the shipbuilding industry, the following types of ship are shown on this special postage stamp issue: 15-pfennig value cargo motor ship type 17 12,500 GRT The ship is a full-deck aircraft and suitable for the transport of piece goods and bulk goods. In addition, 500 tons of freight can be used as deckload. The modern deck and loading facilities, in conjunction with very large hatch covers, ensure fast loading and unloading operations. Length: 151.45 m Width: 20.30 m Height: 11.90 m Load capacity: 12,500 t Engine power: 9,600 hp Speed: 18.2 kts
